Matter explained: what to check before you buy smart home gear
Matter is an open standard from the Connectivity Standards Alliance. Its goal is simple: a device with the Matter logo should work with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and Samsung SmartThings, so you are not locked to one brand.
What it changes
Before Matter, you often had to check whether a bulb or plug worked with your particular app. Matter devices set up through any compatible controller, and many keep working on your local network if the internet goes down.
What it does not fix
- Some advanced features still live in the maker's own app.
- Matter runs over Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread. Thread devices need a Thread border router, which some speakers, displays and hubs include.
- Older devices may need a firmware update to support it, or may never get one.
A short checklist
- Pick your main controller first: the phone and speaker you already use.
- Look for the Matter logo and confirm it on the product page, not only the box.
- If the device uses Thread, check that you have a border router.
- Buy one device first and test it before you buy ten.
- Check the return window.
